Appealing to Women/Hillary Supporters?!

From an AP article:

Palin, who has been in St. Paul since Sunday but out of sight, has a chance Wednesday to speak above the media din and present herself directly to voters as a strong-willed reformer and a solid conservative with appeal to women, including supporters of failed Democratic candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton.
In what possible way?! She's the complete Anti-Hillary! There is NOTHING about her that could POSSIBLY appeal to Hillary supporters!

What because she's a "hockey mom?" Big Whoop. What the hell kind of a hockey mom shows up for work three days after giving birth to a child (with Down Syndrome, no less)?! What the hell kind of "family values" are they when you don't even stay in the hospital or at home to be with your brand new baby? What the hell kind of "family values" do you have when you simply can't be BOTHERED to be with your baby for more than three days?

"Family values" my white, American, Israeli, Bulgarian, Romanian, Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Jewish behind. Heh. No wonder it's so big...

While I want to believe that McCain has just shot himself in the foot with the Palin pick, I have the uneasy feeling that we could be underestimating her, similar to the way we underestimated Dubya in 2000. So many commentators are predicting her demise, or her negative effect on the McCain ticket, they are lowering expectations to the point that she will have to do very little to succeed politically.

Politics is partly a game of expectations. Back in 2000, everyone expected Gore to make mincemeat of Bush in the debates. That he did not, according to many observers, was seen as a triumph for Bush, even though Bush did not seem particularly impressive. By 2004, Kerry had caught on to this strategy, and in the weeks leading up to the first debate, he made a big deal in various interviews about how formidable a debater Bush is. Then Kerry ended up performing well in the first debate, and partly because of the lowered expectations he was seen as the clear winner by nearly everyone.

Well, we'll have to see going in. But the Democratic ticket knows more what's at stake now than their counterparts in 2000 and 2004 understood then, and their going to be VERY careful.

I think Palin is smart and very aggressive, and that she will be good for the ticket unless she does something unforgivably offensive (a.n.: please please do something unforgivably offensive.) However, her appeal is not to Hilary supporters, because really, how stupid do they think women are. Her appeal is to the religious right. And it's a huge appeal.

She's already done something incredibly stupid. She's COMPLETELY against abortion, even if the fetus is a danger to the mother and even in cases of rape and incest. That's pretty dumb.
