Primitive Alien Life May Exist, Says Famed Physicist Stephen Hawking

Fascinating article...

I really don't know what this proves, if anything. Scientists have debated this topic for ages, and just because someone of Hawking's caliber voices his opinion (bad choice of words, but you know what I mean) doesn't mean there's been any breakthrough in our knowledge of the subject. I do personally suspect there's something out there, but I have my doubts that anyone in our lifetime will even come close to finding it.

One more thing. I think, from some of Hawking's remarks, that he has a sly, very English sense of humor that goes over the heads of his interviewers. Maybe it's the American accent of his voice synthesizer that causes people to overlook it.

Eh. I just thought this was interesting. Personally, I think there's got to be SOMETHING out there, probably even something intelligent. After all, as they said in Contact, if there wasn't, it sure would be a huge waste of space...

I always was surprised by that statement in Contact, because it has theological overtones, and Carl Sagan didn't believe in God. I don't remember whether that statement appeared in the book, which I read a long time ago. I think the film Hollywoodized the story a bit by making it more religion-friendly.

A more scientific argument would be that it's unlikely that life just happened to arise on Earth and nowhere else. Then again, I'm not sure how scientific this argument really is. Since scientists still haven't unraveled the mystery of how life arose on Earth (or even if it arose on Earth), they have no way of calculating how likely or unlikely it was.

These discussions remind me of the old debates over the existence of God. People think their own arguments are virtually self-evident, but there simply isn't enough data to confirm or refute anyone's assumptions.
