Presidential Debate Redux

Sorry, but it was BORING because it was practically a word-for-word repeat of the first debate. And again, Obama won. McCain tried to be more "happening," cracking jokes at times, but there was a tinge of desperation there for him (I lost count of how many times he called us "my friends").

Here's hoping to something a bit more lively and something NEW in the last debate next Wednesday night.

Even many of the conservative bloggers and pundits are conceding that the election is basically over. We can't know for certain, but it's a safe bet. At National Review, they printed a letter by someone taking comfort at the idea that Obama will be the next Jimmy Carter--he'll screw up the country, making it ripe for a conservative takeover four years from now a la Reagan.

While I recognize that Obama will have a tough time cleaning up the mess he's inheriting, there's one glaring problem with comparing him to Carter. Carter was not only an inept president, but an inept campaigner, who managed to squander a double-digit lead through a series of dumb errors. Obama, on the other hand, has done one of the most beautifully executed campaigns I have ever seen. Love him or hate him, he is certainly an effective politician.

Carter, by the way, is the only U.S. president to have won the popular vote against an incumbent party and gone on to serve only one term. (I'm not taking into account the ones who have died in office.) Obama will have to fall very hard to become a one-termer. Even mediocre presidents are usually reelected.

All I can say is I hope you're right and here's looking to at least eight, if not twelve or sixteen years, of normal, effective, FOR THE PEOPLE, presidencies!
