See? Obama Isn't Such a Liberal After All...

From the AP:

Obama disagrees with court on child rape case

CHICAGO - Democrat Barack Obama says he disagrees with the Supreme Court's decision outlawing executions of people convicted of raping a child.

Obama told reporters Wednesday that he thinks the rape of a child, ages six or eight, is a heinous crime. He said if a state makes a decision, then the death penalty is potentially applicable.

He disagreed with the court's blanket prohibition.

In a 5-4 vote, the court said the Louisiana law allowing the death penalty to be imposed in such cases violates the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment.
Frankly, I agree with him. On the other hand, another way to deal animals like those who rape children is to lop off their nuts. And everything else attached down there.

Liberal or conservative, there are certain positions that presidential candidates are expected to hold as a kind of baseline, or else risk being perceived as an extremist. For example, Republicans must pay lip service to the "rape, incest, life of the mother" exceptions on the abortion issue, and Democrats must be at least nominally opposed to gay marriage. The last death penalty opponent we had as a major candidate was Dukakis. At least Obama doesn't seem to have flip-flopped on the issue (as Clinton and Gore are thought to have done); he said basically the same thing in his 2006 book.
