Republicans Elect Steele as First Black Chairman

Republicans elect Steele as first black chairman.

Well. Welcome to the 21st century. Interestingly, this man is not even an RNC member. Wonder how THAT works?

As a Marylander who closely followed his unsuccessful Senate run, I think Steele is an imbecile. His ascendancy to RNC chair is a great gift to the Democrats. Well, maybe not as great as if it had been Katon Dawson (who was the second choice!), but the Republican Party still doesn't "get" it. As usual, they think pushing an unqualified token compensates for their credibility problem among blacks.

I dunno, maybe he'll fool me and make a great chairman. Howard Dean had a penchant for saying dumb things, but he turned out to be a great strategist as DNC chair. Still, that's not the impression I have of Steele.

I guess we'll just have to see. Let's hope he IS an imbecile so further nails are put in the coffin of the RNC, because I doubt the RNC is ever going to straighten itself out and become more of a centrist party.

At this point, people at shul are already complaining about Obama being a Socialist and about his choice of Mid-East envoy.

Oh, well. At least Obama, if he IS a Socialist, is a Socialist to benefit all of us, as opposed to Bush, who was a Socialist for the wealthy, the banks, oil, and big business, but a Capitalist for the rest of us...

The Republicans seem to be digging themselves into an ever greater hole. Over at 538, we were discussing whether they could actually disappear and be replaced by another party. That has happened twice in American history, but our system has probably tightened too much by now to allow it to ever happen again. Yet the Republicans could be out of power for quite some time.

Do you know who John McCain at one time wanted as his Mid-East envoy? James Baker. And in his 2000 presidential run, he counted both Baker and Zbigniew Brzezinski among his top foreign policy advisers. I never heard a peep from right-wing Jews over those choices. Yet Obama meets Brzezinski once and suddenly he's Public Enemy #1.

Well, of COURSE! Didn't you know? If a Republican did it, it was with lofty purposes. If a Democrat does it, he's demonized as an anti-Semite and an Israel-hater. And Baker is WAY worse than Mitchell. At least Mitchell will be fair-minded. Baker was and out-and-out anti-Semite...
