An elephant is an intelligent, dignified creature; a donkey is a jackass.<BR/><BR/>On the other hand, elephants look hopelessly old and wrinkly, no matter what their age, and they seem a bit ridiculous in most situations.<BR/><BR/>We need to realize, of course, that these symbols arose at a time when the parties were very different than they are today. In the nineteenth century, Democrats were the conservative party that advocated limited government and states rights, while the Republicans were the radicals who advocated (and achieved) massive government expansion.
